Curriculum

Withinfields Primary School bases its curriculum on the National Curriculum 2014 for Years 1 to 6 and, for Reception and Nursery, the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Our curriculum is centred around topics which last for 5 weeks each.  They incorporate a range of curriculum areas and other subjects that do not fit into the topic are taught discretely that half term.  The topics start with an engagement opportunity which may be a visitor, a trip, a special event etc.  The topics also finish with a demonstration of learning.  Each half term, 4 classes demonstrate their learning to parents. carers and other visitors during our 'Demonstration of Learning' assemblies.  The other classes demonstrate their learning in another form.  This may be in the production of a newspaper, a community workshop event, an ICT based presentation etc.  If the half term is longer than 5 weeks, the additional weeks are planned as enrichment weeks to deliver aspects of the curriculum not covered in the long term plans or to enrich the curriculum in terms of our Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development or our Physical development.  During these enrichment weeks, children often experience working with visitors or attending a trip.

Our Phonics, Early Reading and Early Writing is delivered through a programme called Read, Write Inc.  Once children have progressed beyond Read, Write Inc, they receive daily Guided Reading sessions which also incorporate Spelling and 'Ban Boring Sentences' work.  The Guided Reading element of these sessions aims to develop children's comprehension skills and their appreciation of different types of text.  Our 'Ban Boring Sentences' sessions incorporate Grammar and Punctuation learning.

All children also have a Literacy session every day which focuses on developing children's understanding of different text types and gives opportunities for children to produce pieces of extended writing.

Children in Key Stage 2 are grouped into ability sets for Maths.  These are grouped into 4 groups across Years 3 and 4 and 3 groups across Year 5 and 6.

Further information about the curriculum for each stage within school can be found in the Key Stages section or the contact details can be used to ask further questions.
